Spring Art Newsletter 2022

Spring is sprung – well, almost – the weather was pretty awful over the weekend but art saved the day!!

On Saturday the workshop was a real ‘playtime’ where we looked at Fashion Illustration and Drawing – a bit of a different subject but very enjoyable and perfect for a wet, windy Saturday in our cosy, comfy gallery space in Lennox Head. The objective was to capture clothes and people quickly using ‘gestural drawing techniques’ – trying to use only a few, but important marks.

I come from a family totally fascinated by fashion and my dear mother had loads of books and we all love the Victoria and Albert Costume museum in London.

David Hockney the world famous artist extraordinaire writes in ‘Fashion Drawing in Vogue’ published 1983;

‘The artists who made those drawings in the twenties and thirties and forties could draw better than a lot of so-called serious artists working today – they could simply draw better: and it is particularly interesting that theirs was drawing done not for its own sake, but to be useful. It had a use. It was telling you all kinds of things – things about clothes, Paris, fashion, a whole way of life. The best drawings are never just blank faces but clearly carry the personality of the real figure, the live and active model.’

My Exhibition ‘conversations with the Land’ went better than I imagined and sold a lot of work – always a bit sad to see some work leave but a tidy nest egg for my next visit to London to continue to adore my grandchildren.
