These new works are inspired by the Rinpa style art of Japan and the later work of Kamisaka Sekka. There is an earlier post on this website that describes my visit to an exhibition of Rinpa at the Art Gallery of NSW.
The style depicts flowers and trees, birds and other natural images often using the sun, moon or a stream in a stylistic manner. Gold and silver are often used and bold colour. I have tried to incorporate Australian native plants in my work. The art of Japan is often found on screens with panels that join together – the three paintings below join together to form a screen or triptych. Rinpa art celebrates nature often using the ‘Four Seasons’ as an inspiration and in these times of climate change it seems appropriate to send the message to ‘tread lightly on the planet’.
