Christine’s Overseas Art Retreats – England and France 2018

1. London and Cornwall for 10 days (15 – 26 May 2018)

2. France: Paris and Provence for 10 days (29 May – 9 June 2018)

We will be visiting some of the wonderful art galleries in London and Paris and then we stay for a week of art and good times in gorgeous accommodation where each person has their own double bedroom and most will have have ensuite bathrooms. You do not have to be an artist, just enjoy art and culture!

There are tours to Giverny and Versailles while in Paris and when we stay in a beautiful villa outside Avignon, we will visit, Arles, St Remy and Les Baux.

If you choose to come to Cornwall, I have rented a large house in Newquay (home of English surfing) and hired a car so that we can visit the wonderful Cornish coastline with its magnificent cliffs and picturesque harbours, take in art galleries,  St Ives where there is a thriving artist community, The Eden Project (a fabulous botanical extravaganza housed in geodesic domes), the Minack Theatre and much more.

Drawing and painting opportunities abound – I will give you a visual diary to keep a record of your time, to make notes,  do some drawing in and paste in bits and pieces of memorabilia. We will have some simple art classes, en plein air painting and plenty of free time to do as you wish – but a creative group of people to do it with!

You can see some of the posts from the last retreat on my blog here….

and here….

One of the members of the group who came to Paris and Provence with me in May 2017 had this to say about the experience;

“I was one of the lucky ones!!!  In May 2017 I spent 10 days with a group of 6 local artists at a French Art Retreat which was run by local Lennox Head artist Christine Read.

I can safely say we all had the  “best time ever”. Now if anyone has the chance to join Christine on her next French Art Retreat you would be mad not to go!

The First couple of days were spent trying to absorb as much art that Paris has to offer which is a lot – I’m telling you but if you wanted to do your own thing that was fine too.

We then travelled by train to Avignon in Provence for a week of pure joy. We stayed in a magnificent very spacious villa that was once an old mill and as an added bonus allowed us to have our own bedroom. The days went far too quickly and were filled with painting, exploring small villages – and yes we certainly enjoyed many a local wine! We even visited a night market where we bought fabulous fresh produce which made for some quite creative cooking back at the villa.  But most importantly the highlight for me was the team. Everyone was there for virtually the same reason. To either reinvent or improve their painting style and to simply get totally absorbed in the French culture, the magnificent countryside and exploring tiny French villages but most importantly to have fun. We laughed and we laughed!

Christine took her “tour leader” role seriously making everything so very easy for us. She left nothing to chance as Double checking is her thing. Everything ran very smoothly!! From booking the accommodation, purchasing museum and train tickets and finding fabulous day excursions to other parts of Provence. She even went the extra distance and delivered perfect weather – blue skies every day and no one got sick!!

Not only did I came away with so many wonderful memories I felt totally uplifted from the experience – it was so good for the soul. I hope to do it all again one day.”

How does it work?

You meet up with me and the group in London or Paris and book and pay separately for your London and Paris accommodation – although I will recommend a hotel (3/4 star) and will likely stay there myself – this allows you to find cheaper accomodation in those expensive cities if you wish.

I book and pay for train tickets to Provence and Cornwall and museum entry and public transport in London and Paris.

I book and pay for the houses we stay in for our painting week and tours in France and hire car in England.

We self cater – and go out to restaurants, bistros and wine bars – you pay your own way as far as food is concerned, but everyone ‘mucks in’ very well.

Costs

In France it depends on your choice of accomodation; in the villa in Provence there are no bedrooms on the ground floor, there are three double bedrooms on the first floor which share a bathroom, the other four bedrooms are on the second floor and do have ensuites, however two have stairs within the room to bath or bed. Prices will vary – no ensuite, $2650.00, split level room with ensuite, $2700.00, room with ensuite and no internal stairs $2800.00.

In England there is one price;  all rooms have ensuites two bedrooms are on the ground floor and three on the first floor.

If you wish to do both art retreats I can also book Eurostar tickets to get you one way from London to Paris. It is possible to just do the Provence/ Cornwall sections depending on availability.
