This is another absolutely brilliant exhibition in a suburban art gallery – this one in Manly. I had seen Yeldham’s work a few times in the Wynne Prize and found it fascinatingly detailed. Now I have a much better appreciation of his work. He was a film maker before becoming an artist and he really approaches his art in a holistic way. The images are not simply 2D, he continues the expansion of his creativity into the third dimension and into a spiritual journey reminiscent of an Indigenous approach to art. The board, the paper and other media are carved, hammered with nails, decorated with acrylic pieces and more recently contain moving parts and string attachments – made me think of medieval musical instruments. Definitely worth a trip on the Manly ferry!
