A Taste of Impressionism: visit France! Paris and Provence with Christine Read 15 – 26 May 2017
Paris: 15 – 19 May. Meet in Paris on the 15th or 16th May. I will be in Paris on the 15th and if you arrive that day, we can have dinner together. On the morning of the 16th we will all meet and orient ourselves. I am intending to book us a tour to Monet’s House at Giverny to see the beautiful gardens in their spring glory on the afternoon of the 16th as the main museums and galleries are closed on Tuesdays in Paris.
Please book your own Paris accommodation and it is also a good idea to get a Paris Pass – this gets you into museums without having to wait in a long queue and also provides you with a hop on hop off bus ticket to the various museums and other attractions and a metro pass for a specified number of days.
Accommodation is widely available in Paris – I will stay at Hotel Castex, where I have stayed in the past. It is comfortable and central near the Place de la Bastille and is in the part of Paris known as The Marais. There is a courtyard within the hotel where we could paint, but there are so many options for painting/drawing/ observing in this area! I will suggest we walk and take the Metro and bus to get around and keep a visual diary/art journal of our visit. I will provide you with a visual diary. I will also give you some workshop activities as the opportunity arises If you want to book into Hotel Castex the link is here.
Stay in Paris until 19th May. During the Paris section we will visit Musee d’Orsay. The Louvre, L’Orangerie and take a tour to Giverny to visit Monet’s house and garden. I will book the tour (extra cost – approximately $145.00) to Giverny
Provence: 19 – 26 May: On 19 May we take the TGV (fast train) to Avignon – this cannot be booked until 3 months prior to the date of travel – you can book yourself or I can do so – this cost is extra. I think it will be about $130.00 one way.
Le Moulin Vieux is about 12kms from Avignon. I have rented this beautiful accomodation for us from 19-26 May. It is close to the village of Entraigues sur la Sorgue and has enough bedrooms and bathrooms for 7 people to each have their own bedroom. There is a swimming pool and lovely gardens. We can self cater, but there are restaurants and bakeries etc in the village. Our hosts will collect us and our luggage from Avignon. You can see Le Moulin Vieux here
During this time I will conduct daily workshops – depending on the weather, some will be plein air and we will explore the new and ancient in this area – there are train connections to Avignon. I may hire a car at some point, but I am keen that we don’t make the mistake of becoming ‘tourists’ – we are there to make art and to really ‘see’!
The retreat ends on the 26th May. I will probably remain in Provence and meet up with friends and family. Depending on what you want to do next, I can help with booking TGV travel back to Paris for flights (I suggest you stay a night in Paris before getting your flight if you do this). There are flights out of Marseilles and some to London from Avignon (not to Paris).
