I was in Sydney to chair a conference and managed to pop into the Art Gallery of NSW to see Art Express 2017.  I love to see the work young artists create. This year the work is superb!

A couple of works had a really new twist. A long ‘drawn’ sequence which started at the left with an extremely realistic drawn landscape and progressed through an increasingly abstract process until at the right hand side it was totally geometric, although still retaining the sense of landscape.

Another was a new approach to still life, which combined ink drawing, geometric grid lines and a CMYK printing process by Wollongong student Liam Griffith Wilson.

I was taken with the concept and professionalism of a steel portrait sculpture and the incredible realism and use of colour in a series of pastel portraits by Thomas Ellis Frost of Galston High School.

Another standout was a series of pencil drawings of animals under threat of extinction – the drawing of the animal accompanied by a number – the known number left of that species – ‘En Danger’ by Tiana Grace Chezzi..
